CNC SHEAR CONTROL

Set up the cut from a swivel-mounted touchscreen.

The MGS CNC interface brings backgauge positioning and shear setup to the operator. A hanging swivel control panel keeps the screen within reach while material is positioned at the front table.

Set the required cut length and working stroke for the job. Controller functions and the supplied control package are confirmed with your machine configuration.

VARIABLE RAKE & BLADE CLEARANCE

Match the cutting setup to the sheet.

Variable rake lets the cutting angle be adjusted for the application. Motorized blade-clearance adjustment helps set the gap between the upper and lower blades for the material being sheared.

Rake, clearance and support affect edge quality and strip distortion. Provide the material grade, thickness and narrowest required strip so the cutting setup can be reviewed.

THREE-POINT ROLLER GUIDES

Guide the blade carrier through the cut.

A three-point roller-guide arrangement supports the upper blade carrier. The front guide preload keeps the carrier engaged with its guide surfaces as the blade travels.

This guided vertical cutting motion works with the rake and clearance settings to control the shearing action across the sheet.

POWERED BACKGAUGE

Position the next cut behind the blade.

The powered rear backgauge positions material to the required cutting dimension. Ballscrew drive and linear guides support controlled travel, with positioning managed through the CNC interface.

Backgauge travel and available retract functions depend on the ordered configuration. Specify your longest part, shortest cut and production sequence when requesting a quote.

HYDRAULIC HOLD-DOWNS & FRONT GUARDS

Support the sheet as the blade enters the cut.

Hydraulic hold-downs clamp the sheet at the cutting area. The front finger guard covers the hold-down and blade region while leaving access for sheet positioning.

Front supports, the squaring arm and cutting-line illumination assist setup. The complete guarding and safety package is specified with the machine and installation.

CUTTING BLADES

Set the gap. Maintain the edge.

The guillotine cutting action moves the upper blade past the lower blade. Adjustable blade clearance allows the cutting gap to be set for the material and thickness.

The blade package uses heat-treated 9CrSi material. Blade selection, edge condition and available reversible cutting edges should be reviewed for the work you plan to process.

BRUSH TABLE & ANGLE POSITIONING

Add support for finished surfaces and angled setups.

Optional brush surfaces can be fitted to the table and movable front support arms to help protect sheet finishes. An adjustable angle-positioning device uses a scale and quick locking handle for angled part setups.

Specify the material finish and the parts you need to cut so the front support and positioning options can be selected together.

BACKGAUGE SWING-UP

Provide clearance for longer workpieces.

The optional swing-up backgauge arrangement moves the stop clear for selected workpieces beyond the normal gauging range.

Review the required clearance and operating sequence with your quotation. Swing-up access does not increase the machine's rated plate-cutting capacity.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT GUILLOTINE SHEARS

What is the Titan Class MGS guillotine shear?

The MetalPress Titan Class MGS Series is a hydraulic CNC guillotine shear for straight cutting of sheet and plate. It uses a guided upper blade, adjustable rake and blade clearance, with a powered rear backgauge for positioning.

What cutting lengths are available?

The MGS Series offers six cutting lengths: 2,500, 3,200, 4,000, 5,000, 6,000 and 8,000 mm. These correspond to approximately 98.4, 126.0, 157.5, 196.9, 236.2 and 315.0 inches.

What thickness can the MGS shear cut?

The MGS model table lists a nominal cutting thickness of 10 mm, approximately 0.394 inches, across the six models. Usable capacity depends on material grade, strength, blade setup and cutting length. Confirm the rating for your material with MetalPress.

Why do rake angle and blade clearance matter?

Rake angle changes how the cut progresses across the sheet. Blade clearance sets the gap between the cutting edges. Both settings affect the cut edge and strip distortion, so they should be matched to the material and thickness.

What backgauge travel is available?

The powered backgauge is configured with the machine. MetalPress confirms the final travel and retract functions with the equipment package in your quotation.

Which sheet-handling options are available?

Available configurations include pneumatic rear sheet support, front extraction, brush table surfaces, an angle-positioning stop and a swing-up backgauge. Select these options around the part size, finish and handling sequence.

Can the shear be paired with a press brake or ironworker?

Yes. A guillotine shear prepares straight sheet and plate blanks for subsequent fabrication. A press brake handles bending, while an ironworker combines punching, section shearing and notching. Select each machine for its intended operations.

What information do you need for a quote?

Expert Advice

Guillotine Shear Application Fit Notes

Size a shear for the actual material and full cutting length. Nominal thickness alone does not describe capacity for every grade or the edge quality needed on a narrow strip. Provide the material strength, cut dimensions, strip width and required tolerance.

Plan how the full sheet enters the machine and where the cut piece goes next. Finished surfaces, heavy blanks and repeated batches can change the support, gauging and extraction options that make sense for the job.

For the next bending operation, explore the MetalPress servo hydraulic CNC press brake. For MGS model and handling selection, request a guillotine shear quote.
