A mold and tooling manufacturer based in the U.S. Midwest recently reached out to us through our website, seeking a safer and more efficient way to inspect and maintain their dies. Their team was looking for a solution that could eliminate the need for overhead cranes and manual die separation—while also allowing for hydraulic and cooling system testing in-house.
👉 The Midwestern manufacturer filled out the information request form. This is for you if you need information on our MDS Series.
After an initial inquiry, our engineering team scheduled a consultation to understand their workflow, maximum mold sizes, maximum mold weight, and testing requirements. Based on their input, we recommended the MDS-8 Mold Splitter & Tester, a robust unit from our MDS Series designed specifically for safe mold and die handling and diagnostics.
The MDS-8 offers:
8.8 US Tons (8 metric tons) die or mold weight capacity
49″ (1250 mm) stroke for full die opening
Minimum/Maximum platen distance: 8″ (200 mm) to 57″ (1450 mm)
Hydraulic system pressure: 20MPA
12HP / 8.9KW motor, 480V / 60Hz, 14A
Pump temperature tolerance: up to 120°C
UL Certification for electrical safety compliance
This configuration matched their operational needs while providing room for future die sizes and testing protocols.
Key Features & Customization
MAGNETIC PLATENS
This client chose our optional magnetic platens.
Magnetic platens have transformed the way our die splitter machines handle molds and dies by replacing mechanical clamps with advanced permanent-electro magnetic technology. This innovation provides faster, safer, and more precise die maintenance. With just the push of a button, dies can be securely clamped or released, cutting setup time dramatically and making quick die changes effortless.
The magnetic field applies a uniform holding force across the platen, eliminating stress points and ensuring perfect die alignment every time.
WHAT HAPPENS IF THE POWER GOES OFF?
Safety is another key benefit. Even in a power failure, the magnets retain full holding strength, preventing accidental die movement. Operators also enjoy unobstructed access to the mold surface—ideal for cleaning, polishing, or repairs—without bulky clamps in the way. Maintenance requirements are minimal since there are no moving mechanical parts to wear out or break.
ADJUSTABLE LOCATING PLATE
As a standard feature, we include a lower adjustable locating plate to further speed up die or mold installation.
Design & Assembly
Once the configuration was approved, our design team finalized the CAD models and control schematics. Fabrication began with the reinforced steel frame and precision-machined platens. The hydraulic system was assembled and pressure-tested, followed by installation of the Siemens PLC and HMI interface for intuitive control.
Safety features—including CAT4 light curtains and magnetic die clamps—were integrated to ensure operator protection during tilt and test cycles. Electrical panels were wired and verified to meet UL industrial standards.
Once the design was approved, our fabrication and assembly teams began putting together the MDS-8 Die Splitter & Tester at our Cambridge facility. These behind-the-scenes images showcase the hands-on process of assembling a custom die handling machine built for precision mold and tooling operations.
Our technicians welded the reinforced steel frame, installed the hydraulic cylinders, and wired the Siemens PLC and HMI control system—all with the precision required for industrial die maintenance equipment. The machine’s 8-ton tilting capacity and 49-inch stroke demanded close coordination between our mechanical and electrical teams to ensure safe and reliable operation.
"The level of cooperation, clear communication, and punctuality in MetalPress is unique. We had numerous dedicated sessions with the engineering and sales team to reach the perfect design."
